The story behind

Da Funk, according to DoReSol

When Daft Punk set out to create Da Funk, the idea was to capture the essence of *gangsta rap* and *electro*. To achieve this, they immersed themselves in the sound of American *G-funk*, using a Roland TB-303 synthesizer to shape the bassline. Initially, they considered using a siren sound as the main riff, but opted for something that better reflected the style they were seeking. The melody, according to Bangalter, was intended to evoke the music of Italian producer Giorgio Moroder. The result was an instrumental piece that, with its powerful distorted synthesizer riffs, a driving beat, and gritty guitars, became a unique fusion of electronic dance and funk.

The story of Da Funk is interesting. It was originally released as a 12-inch single in May 1995 by Soma Quality Recordings, with a limited run of 2,000 copies that went largely unnoticed. However, its popularity grew when The Chemical Brothers included it in their live sets. Shortly after, Daft Punk remixed a track by this British duo. The song also received early support from DJ Annie Nightingale of BBC Radio 1. Following a bidding war between record labels, Daft Punk signed with Virgin Records, and Da Funk was re-released in early 1997. This version, along with the B-side Musique, appeared on their debut album, Homework, released on January 20, 1997. The album, recorded in a home studio, was distributed with the tracks spread evenly across its four vinyl sides. Da Funk, along with Around the World, reached number one on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Play charts in the United States. The album version of Da Funk sold 30,000 copies.
