More about Incubus

Biography

Initially, they played in small clubs and parties, and eventually became opening acts for established Hollywood bands like Poison. In 1990, José Pasillas, who played percussion, met Mike Einziger, a guitarist who spent most of his time on his instrument, and Álex Katunich, a bassist who had been expelled from a jazz band for not knowing how to read sheet music. The three decided to meet up to play covers of Megadeth and Metallica for fun. They soon became known in their neighborhood, but needed a vocalist. They convinced Brandon Boyd, childhood friend of Mike Einziger, who possessed a notable vocal talent. They decided to form a band and stop playing covers to create their own songs.

Their first track, "Love Sick", had a sound that many describe as "semi-Incubus", with influences of funk and thrash metal. In addition to "Love Sick", they composed songs like "Purple Kool-Aid", "Sylvester Polyester", "My Soul (The Underground)", and "The Milkman Song". In 1991, they started playing at parties, being the first for a friend named Kirsten. At that time, they still didn't have a name for the band and needed to choose one. Brandon suggested unusual names like Spiral Staircase or Chimera, while Álex proposed Chunk-O-Funk. Finally, Mike consulted a dictionary and found the word Incubus, which in medieval Europe referred to a male demon that visited women in their dreams.

The others found it interesting and decided to adopt it as the band's name. However, their performance at Kirsten's party was a disaster, as several things did not go as expected.
