Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots emerged in 1989 in San Diego, California, somewhat on the fringes of the Seattle epicenter but equally swept up by the wave that transformed rock. The original lineup, with Scott Weiland on vocals, Eric Kretz on drums, and brothers Dean (guitar) and Robert DeLeo (bass), remained together from the beginning until Weiland's departure in February 2013. Later, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington joined in May 2013, but amicably left in November 2015. Weiland passed away that December, and Bennington two years later. In 2016, the band opened an online call to find a new vocalist, announcing Jeff Gutt as their new singer on November 14, 2017.

Before being known as Stone Temple Pilots, the band went through names like Swing and Mighty Joe Young. They signed with Atlantic Records and, after recording a demo around 1990 that included tracks they would later reinterpret for their debut album, they changed their name. The inspiration for "STP" came from oil stickers they liked as youngsters. Their debut album, Core, released in 1992, was a major commercial success. This record, which blended fury and drama with an almost spiritual energy, contained songs like “Creep” and “Plush,” which catapulted them to massive fame, although they also generated comparisons with Pearl Jam. However, over time it was understood that their proposal was a search for beauty amidst the noise.

More about Stone Temple Pilots

Biography

After Core, they released four more studio albums: Purple (1994), Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop (1996), No. 4 (1999), and Shangri-La Dee Da (2001), before disbanding in 2003. During this period, the members explored other projects, such as Velvet Revolver and Army of Anyone. The band reunited in 2008 for a tour and released their self-titled sixth album in 2010. In 2013, they released the EP High Rise, their only work recorded with Bennington as lead vocalist. With Gutt, they have released two more albums: a second self-titled record in 2018 and Perdida in 2020.

While initially associated with the early nineties grunge movement, Stone Temple Pilots explored a variety of styles in their later works, including psychedelic rock, bossa nova, and classic rock. They are considered one of the most successful rock bands of the nineties, having sold over 18 million albums in the United States and 40 million worldwide during that decade. Their sound, dense and melodic, had roots in seventies hard rock and emerging grunge, but with a particular focus on melody and clean arrangements.
