The story behind

Clean, according to DoReSol

The song Clean by Incubus, with a duration of 3:56, emerges from a moment of deep reflection for the band. After an exhausting tour that followed the release of their first album for a major label, S.C.I.E.N.C.E., the members found themselves writing new material. This creative process took place after an intense period of live performances that began in mid-1997. The band, formed in 1991 in Calabasas, California, had already explored a mix of funk, alternative rock, and electronic elements, seeking a distinctive sound that would distance them from influences like Red Hot Chili Peppers or Faith No More.

The album that Clean is part of, Make Yourself, was released in October 1999 through Epic and Immortal Records. This work marked the first recording with new member Chris Kilmore on turntables, who joined the band in February 1998, replacing DJ Lyfe. The album's production was handled by the band themselves along with Scott Litt, who also participated in the mixing alongside Rick Will. This album generated several singles that reached the top positions on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, including Pardon Me, Stellar, and Drive. Of these, Drive not only topped the alternative chart but also became the band's only song to date to enter the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
