Drive

When you listen to *Drive*, you encounter a song that invites you to reflect on the decisions we make in life. The lyrics, according to Brandon Boyd, speak of how fear can be a constant driver, leading us to act out of caution rather than freedom. Imagining a path where choices are not tinged by that apprehension is the central idea he sought to convey. The song's sound, with its subtle samples and scratches, added to Boyd's distinctive voice, sets it apart from what might be considered a traditional rock ballad. Despite having familiar elements like harmonies and percussion, the combination Incubus achieved in *Drive* turned out to be their biggest hit and the one that introduced them to a wider audience.

This track was released on November 14, 2000, as part of the album Make Yourself, released in 1999. It was a key moment for the band, as Make Yourself marked the first time they worked with turntablist Chris Kilmore, who joined the group in February 1998. The recording of this album, which included *Drive*, took place at NRG studios in North Hollywood, with production by Scott Litt and the band itself. The music video for *Drive*, directed by Phil Harder, was inspired by M.C. Escher's work *Drawing Hands* and showed Brandon Boyd drawing himself, a task he and drummer José Pasillas performed with great detail. Scenes of the band playing were filmed at the McNamara Alumni Center at the University of Minnesota, and there were also shots in Bairnsdale, Australia.
