Pixies

Pixies started in Boston, United States, in 1986. They were four guys who met in college, studying anthropology. Joey and Black Francis became friends by chance, shared a room, and started playing music. Francis already had song ideas, which he wrote while walking on the subway. Things got more complicated, and they joined with Kim Deal, who didn't know how to play bass, but borrowed it from a friend and brought it along. Thus, the band was formed.

The music of Pixies is strange, mixing things that are unexpected. There are soft melodies, but also screams and noise. Francis sings as if he is desperate, with a voice that never stops moving. The lyrics go from the strange, from things that cannot be explained, from violent images, from situations that make no sense. Sometimes he talks about what happens in the head, about what is seen in the Bible, about what happens between siblings. It's as if music is a place where you can say things that cannot be said elsewhere.

Their style influenced many people, especially bands that started to sound in the 90s. Kurt Cobain, of Nirvana, was a fan. This helped their legacy to spread, although the band was no longer together. They were a voice in the alternative scene, with a sound that was never repeated.

The band was formed in a place where lived a lady who was deaf. In that apartment, they started rehearsing. Everything started with an ad in the newspaper, looking for a bassist who knew both folk and hardcore. Kim Deal was the only one who responded, although she didn't know how to play bass. She borrowed it from a friend, brought it along, and thus everything began.
