The story behind
The song River Euphrates, with its 2:32 duration, is the sixth track on the album Surfer Rosa, positioned between two well-known songs by the Pixies: Gigantic and Where Is My Mind?. It is an energetic, distorted track that narrates a man's peculiar journey through the Middle East and one of its most emblematic rivers. There are two recordings of this piece, both with the same lyrics. The version found on the album was mixed with the characteristic production of Steve Albini, a "dry" style that was also used on Nirvana's In Utero. On the other hand, there is an alternative version that appeared as the B-side of the single Gigantic, re-recorded at Southern Studios in London, and which includes a guitar solo at the end.
The Pixies, an alternative rock band formed in 1986 in Boston, United States, were characterized by integrating elements of punk and surf rock into their sound. Although their music was melodic, they could also be quite incisive, something reflected in the lyrics of Francis, their main songwriter and vocalist, who performed them with a voice that conveyed desperation. Their compositions often explored the inexplicable, from UFO phenomena to surrealism, and did not shy away from topics such as mental instability, violent imagery drawn from the Bible, incest, or physical harm. Despite the group disbanding in 1993, they reunited in 2004. While their commercial success in their home country was modest, they achieved much greater recognition in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom. The album Surfer Rosa, released in March 1988 by the British label 4AD, was produced by Steve Albini and included references to lyrics in Spanish and to Puerto Rico, along with experimental recording techniques and a very distinctive drum sound.
