The story behind
Something Against You, according to DoReSol
The first time you listen to *Something Against You*, you encounter a piece that, in just one minute and forty-eight seconds, condenses raw energy and sonic experimentation that invites you to pay attention. It's not just the duration that draws attention, but how the Pixies manage to pack so many ideas into such a short time. There's an audacity in how they build the sound, using techniques that break the mold, and you can hear that influence of punk and surf rock that defines them, filtered through a particular sensibility. The lyrics, often written by Black Francis, explore themes ranging from the surreal to the darkest, sometimes with references that can be striking, such as images from the Bible or mental health issues, all sung with that desperate voice that became a hallmark of the band.
This track is part of Surfer Rosa, the debut album by the Pixies, released in March 1988. It was recorded at a time when the band, formed in 1986 in Boston, United States, already had a unique dynamic. The production and engineering were handled by Steve Albini, who brought a very direct and unconventional approach to the sound. Although Surfer Rosa did not have a major commercial impact at the time, especially in the United States, it did mark a starting point for the alternative sound that would explode in the following years. The initial distribution in their home country was managed by Rough Trade Records, while in Europe, the label 4AD was in charge. Even though only one single was released, a regrabbed version of Gigantic, which reached position 93 on the UK Singles Chart, the album itself became a reference for many musicians, including Kurt Cobain, who acknowledged the influence the Pixies had on Nirvana.
