The story behind

With an impact that shakes you from the first moment, Broken Face bursts forth as the sonic calling card of Pixies on their first studio album, Surfer Rosa. This piece, barely exceeding a minute and a half in length, condenses raw and nervous energy, opening the record with an explosion that anticipates the intensity to come. The composition, the work of Frank Black, is distinguished by its experimental sound and distinctive percussion that sets it apart from the conventional. Elements that already marked the band's style can be perceived in it, such as the inclusion of lyrics in Spanish and allusions to Puerto Rico, along with themes exploring mutilation and voyeurism, all wrapped in a provocative sonic atmosphere.

The recording of Surfer Rosa, released in March 1988 under the British label 4AD, was handled by engineer and producer Steve Albini. Although 4AD was an independent record label, distribution in the United States was handled by Rough Trade Records, with the album failing to chart in either country. From this work, a single single was released, a re-recorded version of Gigantic, which reached number 93 on the UK Singles Chart. The band, formed in 1986 in Boston, United States, was characterized by music influenced by punk and surf rock, with lyrics that often addressed the inexplicable, the surreal, mental instability, and references to violent imagery. Despite not achieving great commercial success in their country, Pixies exerted a notable influence on 1990s alternative rock, being recognized by figures such as Kurt Cobain.
