The story behind
The song Cactus by Pixies, included in their 1988 debut album, Surfer Rosa, has a particular detail in its structure that reveals a playful connection with the band itself. During a passage between the second verse and the chorus, the band members and those in the studio can be heard spelling out the name "Pixies". Kim Deal, who at the time was credited on the album as 'Mrs John Murphy', commented that this idea was an imitation of something T. Rex had done in one of their songs, spelling out "T-R-E-X". She was reluctant to participate, considering it unoriginal, and in fact, she was the only one who didn't do it. Steve Albini, the recording engineer and producer, agreed and thought it was a good idea.
The recording of Cactus took place in November 1987 at Downtown Recorders in Boston, United States. The track was composed and sung by Black Francis, and the production was handled by Steve Albini. The album Surfer Rosa, released in March 1988 by the British label 4AD, was characterized by incorporating distinctive elements of Pixies' proposal, such as the use of Spanish lyrics and references to Puerto Rico, along with experimental recording techniques and a very particular drum sound. Although the album did not chart in the United States or the United Kingdom, its influence on alternative rock was noticeable. The song Cactus has been covered by other artists; David Bowie included it in his 2002 album Heathen, and even Black Francis re-recorded it for his 2004 album, Frank Black Francis.
