The story behind
Oh My Golly! / [untitled], according to DoReSol
The first time you listen to Oh My Golly! / [untitled], you're met with a raw energy that grabs you instantly. The recording, which barely exceeds two and a half minutes, carries that distinctive mark of Steve Albini, who handled both engineering and production. There's a clear experimentation in the sound, with a particular treatment of the drums that gives it a unique character. Additionally, there are elements that connect with Pixies' earlier work, such as the use of lyrics in Spanish and references to Puerto Rico, adding layers to the listening experience.
This track is part of Surfer Rosa, the debut album by Pixies, released in March 1988 under the British label 4AD. While distribution in the United States was handled by Rough Trade Records, the album failed to chart in either country. From this release came a single re-recording of Gigantic, which reached position 93 on the UK Singles Chart. Later, in 1992, Elektra Records reissued Surfer Rosa in the United States. The band, formed in Boston in 1986, was known for a sound influenced by punk and surf rock, with lyrics that often explored unusual and sometimes disturbing themes, such as unexplained phenomena or imagery drawn from the Bible. Despite never achieving massive commercial success, their impact on alternative rock was significant, later being recognized as a key influence for bands like Nirvana.
