The story behind
Brick Is Red, according to DoReSol
The song Brick Is Red, with its duration of just over two minutes, condenses a sonic proposal that draws from the roots of the Pixies. There is a perceived connection with the band's previous material, including the presence of lyrics in Spanish and references to places like Puerto Rico. The recording, handled by the Engineer and Producer Steve Albini, stands out for its experimental techniques and a very distinctive drum sound, elements that already defined the group's identity.
This track is part of Surfer Rosa, the debut album by the Pixies, released in March of 1988. The band, formed in 1986 in Boston, United States, consisted of Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and Dave Lovering. Although their commercial success in their home country was moderate, their influence was strongly felt in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom. Surfer Rosa, initially distributed in the United States by Rough Trade Records, did not enter the popularity charts in either country. From this album, a single was extracted: a re-recorded version of Gigantic, which reached position 93 on the UK Singles Chart. The album was reissued in 1992 by Elektra Records and, by 2005, had achieved gold certification.
