The story behind

The song *Tony's Theme* by Pixies, with its 1:52 duration, delves into a sound that draws from the roots of alternative rock and surf rock. The band, formed in 1986 in Boston, United States, was characterized by a musical proposal that, while melodic, did not shy away from exploring rawer and more direct territories. The lyrics, often written by Black Francis, addressed themes ranging from the inexplicable, such as UFO phenomena or surrealism, to darker and more disturbing aspects, including references to the Bible, incest, or physical harm, all delivered with a voice that conveyed a sense of urgency.

The debut of Pixies, the album Surfer Rosa, released in March 1988 through the British label 4AD, was an early showcase of these concerns. Recorded with experimental techniques and a distinctive drum sound, the record incorporated elements that already defined the band, such as the use of lyrics in Spanish and allusions to Puerto Rico. The production was handled by Steve Albini, who also served as recording engineer. Despite Surfer Rosa not charting in the United States or the United Kingdom, and only one single being released, a re-recorded version of *Gigantic*, which reached number 93 on the UK Singles Chart, the album was reissued in the United States by Elektra Records in 1992, and in 2005 it received gold certification. The band, which also included Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and Dave Lovering, broke up in 1993 but reunited in 2004, leaving a legacy of influence on alternative rock, something even Kurt Cobain of Nirvana acknowledged.
