The result was an album that connected with both critics and the public. Joyride topped the charts in seven European countries and achieved multi-platinum certifications in several regions. It became one of the best-selling albums of all time in Argentina, Austria, and Germany. From this work, singles were released such as the title track, Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave), The Big L., Spending My Time, and Church of Your Heart. To present the album, Roxette embarked on the "Join the Joyride! Tour", which led them to perform for over 1.7 million people across four continents. By the year 2001, Joyride had already sold over 11 million copies worldwide.
Per Gessle was the main songwriter of the lyrics, and he also handled most of the music. However, there were interesting collaborations: Gessle and Mats Persson co-wrote Spending My Time, (Do You Get) Excited?, and Perfect Day. Marie Fredriksson, for her part, co-wrote the music for Hotblooded and completely composed the ballad Watercolours in the Rain, using lyrics that Gessle had written years earlier. This songwriting dynamic, where Fredriksson put music to Gessle's lyrics, expanded the duo's sonic possibilities, although she herself commented that writing in English was a challenge for her. The album also had a special 30th-anniversary reissue on November 26, 2021.
