The story behind

The Big L., according to DoReSol

When you dive into The Big L., you encounter a song that Per Gessle conceived with a particular spark. It was recorded in June 1990 at EMI studios in Stockholm, Sweden, and was released as a single on August 12, 1991, as part of the album Joyride. What's interesting is that, although it performed well in several European countries, reaching the top 10 in Belgium, Ireland, and Sweden, and peaking at number 24 in France, it was not released as a single in North America. The production, handled by Clarence Öfwerman, is described as another testament to Gessle's ability to create catchy pop melodies, with rocking beats in the background and a polished yet direct production that gives it strength.

The album Joyride, released in March 1991, was the successor to the successful Look Sharp!. The recording process for this album spanned eleven months in Sweden, and the duo Roxette felt pressure from the record label to create a successful follow-up, resisting the idea of moving to Los Angeles to work with American producers. The Big L., written entirely by Per Gessle, was part of this effort. Critics have noted it as a continuation of the style that Gessle and Marie Fredriksson had explored with "The Look", describing it as an energetic pop piece with touches of classic rock and roll, and even comparing it to the sound of Gyllene Tider in the 90s. Recording credits include Anders Herrlin and Alar Suurna as engineers, and the mixing involved Per Gessle, Clarence Öfwerman, Roxette, and Alar Suurna.
