The story behind
When you dive into Joyride, you are met with an explosion of pop energy that invites you to move. The song, born from the pen of Per Gessle and produced by Clarence Öfwerman, was released on February 25, 1991. It was the first single from their third studio album, which bore the same name, Joyride. It quickly became one of Roxette's biggest hits and one of the most successful singles of 1991, reaching the top spots on charts across Europe, as well as in Australia, Canada, and the United States. The music video accompanying Joyride, directed by Doug Freel, had a strong presence on MTV Europe.
The initial spark for the lyrics of Joyride came from a note that Per Gessle's then-girlfriend left him on the piano, which read "Hej, din tok, jag älskar dig" — "Hello, you fool, I love you." The title, meanwhile, emerged from an interview where Paul McCartney compared the experience of composing with John Lennon to "a long car ride" (a "joyride"). Even Dave Edwards, who was Roxette's tour manager, contributes narration to the song. Critics highlighted its catchy chorus and festive spirit; some described it as a "carnival song" and others noted influences from the Beatles with psychedelic touches, as well as comparisons to ABBA's style. The track was recorded in July 1990 at EMI studios in Stockholm, Sweden, and is classified within the pop rock genre.
