The story behind

Spending My Time, according to DoReSol

When you dive into Spending My Time, you encounter a melody that captivates you, a kind of contained melancholy that invites reflection. It's one of those songs that, without being strident, stays with you. Marie Fredriksson's voice has that warm yet heartbreaking quality that makes every word resonate. The overall sound is described as a pop-rock ballad with an acoustic anchor, and that careful construction is noticeable. It was recorded at EMI studio in Stockholm during July 1990, with production handled by Clarence Öfwerman, and Anders Herrlin and Alar Suurna on recording engineering.

Although the song was released as a single in October 1991, as part of the album Joyride, its story has an interesting nuance. Per Gessle, one of the composers along with Mats Persson, even thought it would be their biggest hit. However, the circumstances of the record industry at the time, with the merger of EMI and the consequent restructuring, meant that the support from the US record label was not as expected. Despite this, the song achieved considerable impact, reaching the top positions in the charts of Germany, Canada, and Italy, and positioning itself at number 22 on the UK Singles Chart and 32 on the US Billboard Hot 100. There is even a Spanish version, titled Un Día Sin Ti, which was released in 1996. The music video, directed by Wayne Isham, shows Fredriksson in different home settings, conveying the song's intimate atmosphere.
