The story behind

The song Soul Deep, which we can play today, has an interesting story behind its creation. Originally, Per Gessle wrote it in Swedish with a quite different title: Dansar nerför ditt stup i rekordfart, which translates to "Dancing off the edge of your cliff at record speed." However, Gessle felt the original lyrics were "too silly" and decided to create an English version. This English version was the one released as a single.

The recording of Soul Deep took place in September 1986 at EMI Studios in Stockholm. It was produced by Clarence Öfwerman, who also handled the mixing along with Roxette and Alar Suurna. The recording engineers were Anders Herrlin, Alar Suurna, and Robert Wellerfors. The track was included on the duo's debut album, Pearls of Passion, released in 1986. As a single, Soul Deep went on sale on February 17, 1987, and although it was well-received in Sweden, reaching number 18 on the charts for three consecutive weeks, it did not manage to chart in other markets like Germany or Canada. The 12-inch editions of the single included an extended version of the song, remixed by Kaj Erixon, which also appeared on the compilation Dance Passion. Later, in 1991, a restructured and remixed version of Soul Deep was included on the album Joyride.
