Os Paralamas do Sucesso

When Herbert Vianna and Bi Ribeiro reunited in Rio de Janeiro in 1981, after having met as children in Brasília, they already shared a passion for rock. They began rehearsing together, adding drummer Vital Dias, and created songs with a humorous touch, such as *As Cadeirinhas da Vovó*. The band, which initially bore that name, sought a distinctive sound.

In 1982, the group decided to go professional, and Herbert took on the role of vocalist in addition to playing guitar. The name changed to Os Paralamas do Sucesso. Soon after, João Barone joined on drums, solidifying the lineup that would endure. That same year, they sent a demo of *Vital e sua Moto* to Fluminense FM, and the song became a radio hit. This momentum led them to sign with EMI and release their first album, Cinema Mudo, in 1983, which included humorous tracks from their earlier stage.

Biography

The year 1984 marked a turning point with the release of O Passo do Lui. This album brought a series of hits like *Óculos*, *Me Liga*, and *Meu Erro*, propelling them to the stage of Rock in Rio, where their performance was highly acclaimed. Though rooted in Brasília’s rock scene, the band established itself in Rio de Janeiro, blending rock with reggae influences and Latin and African rhythms. Their third album, Selvagem?, released in 1985, sold around 600,000 copies, cementing their popularity with tracks like *Alagados* and *Melô do Marinheiro*.

International recognition arrived in 1987 with their participation in the Montreux Festival in Switzerland, documented on the album D. The late 1980s saw the release of Bora Bora (1988) and Big Bang (1988), the latter featuring classics like *Lanterna dos Afogados*. In the 1990s, they released the compilation Arquivo (1991) and the album Os Grãos (1991). After Herbert Vianna’s solo project in 1992, they returned with Severino in 1994, an album recorded in England that, despite exploring more complex sounds, did not meet expectations.

To reconnect with their audience, they released Vamo Batê Lata in 1995, a live album reimagining their greatest hits that approached one million copies sold. This success paved the way for Nove Luas (1996), an album with simpler compositions that performed well on the charts. In 1998, Hey Na Na proved they had rediscovered their formula, and in 1999, they recorded the Acústico MTV, solidifying their legacy.
