Os Paralamas do Sucesso

Os Paralamas do Sucesso is a Brazilian pop rock group that started gaining attention in the 1980s. Herbert Vianna, Bi Ribeiro and João Barone are the three who make up the band. At first, they mixed rock with reggae, but over time they incorporated rhythms and sounds from their country. They were part of the "Cuarteto Sagrado del rock brasileño", along with other important bands.

The Paralamas have a lot of popularity in Argentina, where they sold 260,000 copies. They also managed to get a place in other countries in America, such as the United States, Mexico or Chile. Although they were associated with the generation of Brasilia, the band was born in Seropédica. Herbert moved there in 1977 to study, and Bi a year later, to finish high school. Together they decided to form a band. Herbert brought his Fender guitar, and Bi, who had never played anything before, used a bass he had brought from England. Later the drummer Vital Días joined them.

Biography

They practiced in Bi's grandmother's house, and from that they came up with the song Vovó Ondina é Gente Fina. They played in small places until, in 1982, Vital couldn't go to a performance at the Universidade Federal Rural de Río de Janeiro and had to stay João Barone. They wrote a song thinking about him, Vital e sua Moto, and sent it to the Rádio Fluminense. The song was very popular in the summer of 1983, and the Paralamas had their first big show opening for Lulu Santos at Circo Voador. They then signed with EMI and recorded the album Cinema Mudo, which Herbert described as a manipulation by the recording studio staff.

In 1984 they released O Passo do Lui, with songs like Óculos and Meu Erro. They were acclaimed at the first Rock in Rio in 1985. In 1986, Selvagem? was an album that opposed the manipulation in its cover, where Bi's brother appeared in the forest. They mixed popular Brazilian sounds, with hits like Alagados and A Novidade, which included Gilberto Gil. It sold 700,000 copies and took them to the Montreux Festival, where they recorded the live album D.

The next album was Bora Bora (1988), which added a saxophone and a keyboardist, João Fera. It mixed upbeat songs like O Beco with more sad ones, like Quase Um Segundo. There was also Uns Días, which perhaps reflected Herbert's separation from Paula Toller, of Kid Abelha. The Big Bang album of 1989 continued in the same style, with songs like Perplexo and Lanterna dos Afogados.
