Ska by Os Paralamas do Sucesso is that song that sounds like a street party but with an unexpected twist. It’s not the most classic ska, the kind that comes straight from Jamaica with its clean trumpets and binary rhythms. Here, the genre blends with 80s Brazilian rock, and the result is a track that clocks in at 2:29 but leaves you wanting to keep moving your feet. What stands out most is that bass line that Herbert Vianna and Bi Ribeiro crafted to keep the song from being too obvious: it’s not a perfect loop, it has a slight imbalance that gives it that air of improvisation that hooks you instantly.The album O Passo do Lui came out in 1984, just as the band had already tested the waters with their debut, Cinema Mudo, which didn’t quite win them over—or even themselves.
