The story behind
Óculos, according to DoReSol
The song Óculos by Os Paralamas do Sucesso has a hook that goes beyond its catchy rhythm: it’s a joke with substance. The narrator complains that the girls from Leblon no longer look at him because he wears glasses, but defends himself by saying that "behind those lenses there’s a cool guy." The humor lies in the fact that the accessory, which ultimately serves no real purpose—as Herbert Vianna himself admitted years later—ends up symbolizing an insecurity we all recognize. It’s not just a song about vanity: it’s self-criticism disguised as fast-paced ska, with the bass and drums driving every syllable as if time were running out.
The song was released in 1984 as the first single from the album O Passo do Lui, the record that defined the band’s sound by blending rock with Caribbean influences. Vianna wrote it in the first person, but not as a serious lament: the humor comes from the exaggerated complaint and the ridiculous solution ("just a pair of cool glasses"). The track exploded on the radio and, months later, became the band’s highlight at the first Rock in Rio in January 1985. By then, the Paralamas were no longer a promise: they were the band that had turned a song about glasses into a generational anthem. Ironically, just after this success, Vianna had eye surgery, making it clear the glasses were pure affectation. The song, however, remained untouched—a joke that never ages.
