More about Sumo
Biography
After Luca's death, the group split up. From its ex-members other bands emerged, like Divididos and Las Pelotas. But Sumo, although it didn't last long, left a mark. They introduced British post-punk into Argentine rock, especially through their songs in English. They also gave a more visceral touch to Spanish rock, which at that time was influenced by progressive and nueva canción.
Luca Prodan was already in London in the 70s. He played in pubs with his band, The New Clear Heads. He also went to concerts, was fascinated by progressive rock, reggae and punk. He worked at Virgin, selling records in Marble Arch. But everything got complicated when his sister Claudia died from heroin. Luca collapsed, was in a coma from an overdose.
In 1980, seeking to escape from drugs, he went to Argentina. He was invited by a friend, Timmy MacKern, an Argentine of Scottish origin. He sent him a photo of his family in Nono, in the sierras of Córdoba. It seemed like a paradise to him. Upon arrival, Timmy picked him up at the airport and took him to his house in Hurlingham. There he met his brother-in-law, Germán Daffunchio, who was a sailor. After dinner, Daffunchio played a guitar and Luca sang. That night the idea of forming a band was born. They went to Timmy's countryside, where they started playing and recording. From there came Sumo.
