The story behind

Regtest by Sumo is that track that appears almost like a whisper within Divididos por la felicidad, yet ends up being a small universe unto itself. It’s not the most well-known hit from the album — that spot belongs to La rubia tarada — but there it is, with its repetitive structure and that air between experimental and raw that makes every time it plays, one feels like they’re listening to something that escaped from a rehearsal or an improvised session. The song doesn’t aim to be perfect; it aims to be honest. And in that gesture lies its strength. The album was recorded at the CBS Records studios in Buenos Aires during the first months of 1985, at a time when Sumo was still far from being more than a band playing in bars and pubs of Hurlingham. The official release was on April 1st of that year, but the real breakthrough came with the performances at the Astros theater on May 11th and 12th, where the audience began to see them as more than just a cult group. Luca Prodan, their leader, was already gaining notoriety, but it was this album that cemented him as a key figure in Argentine rock. The album’s title, by the way, is a direct nod to Joy Division, that British post-punk group that shaped an entire generation. Regtest is not just another song in that context: it’s the sound of a band finding its place without needing to conform to the rules.
