Rage Against the Machine

Rage Against the Machine —also known as RATM— starts from a curious fact: the name comes from a song that Zack de la Rocha had written for his previous band of hardcore punk, Inside Out. And before that, the phrase 'rage against the machine' had already appeared in 1989, in an article from the zine No Answers, written by Kent McClard. The name had its own history before the band existed. The lineup came together in 1991 almost by accident. When the band of Tom Morello, Lock Up, disbanded, the former drummer of that group, Jon Knox, pushed Tim Commerford and De la Rocha to play with Morello.

The guitarist completed the quartet with Brad Wilk, who had failed auditions for both Lock Up and the band that would later become Pearl Jam. These four —De la Rocha on vocals, Commerford on bass, Morello on guitar and Wilk on drums— would be RATM. Their sound mixes heavy metal, rap, punk rock and funk, with a left-wing political discourse that runs through all their work. Their debut album of the same name was released in 1992, and it was their appearance at the Lollapalooza festival in 1993 that catapulted them to a massive audience. Years later, in 2003, that first album entered the 368th position in the list of the 500 best albums of Rolling Stone.

More about Rage Against the Machine

Biography

The next two, Evil Empire (1996) and The Battle of Los Angeles (1999), reached number one on the Billboard 200. VH1 placed them at number 33 on their list of the 100 best hard rock artists. By 2010, the band had sold over 16 million albums worldwide. The first phase ended in 2000: creative differences led to De la Rocha's departure, who continued with a discreet solo career. Commerford, Morello and Wilk then formed Audioslave with Chris Cornell, former leader of Soundgarden; they recorded three albums before splitting in 2007. That same year RATM reunited and played together for the first time in seven years at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

They remained active live —with a break in 2009— until they paused again in 2011. In 2016, Morello, Commerford and Wilk formed Prophets of Rage with B-Real, Chuck D and DJ Lord: this project released an EP and a full album before disbanding in 2019.In November 2019 they announced a new world tour, originally scheduled for 2020, postponed first to 2021 and then to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, after five nominations to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame —in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023—, they were finally inducted. Morello was the only one to attend the ceremony to receive the recognition on behalf of all.

On January 4, 2024, through Brad Wilk's Instagram account, the band announced that they would no longer perform live or go on tour.
