Fun facts

Rage Against the Machine released "Freedom" as their fourth and final single in December 1993. It was taken from their album of the same name, which already had its own weight. The song moved into more personal, more introspective territory than usual. It wasn't the kind of track that screamed against the system, but rather one that stayed in your head for a while, as if it were asking you something. Zack de la Rocha's voice felt closer, more vulnerable, as if he were speaking directly into your ear. The guitar remained powerful, but now had space to breathe, to let the lyrics stay. It was a change of pace, but not of direction.

The story behind

Rage Against the Machine recorded "Freedom" in 1993, as the fourth single from their album of the same name. The song was released in December of that year, and its video was filmed in a small location, with the band performing live. The video's story revolves around Leonard Peltier, leader of the American Indian Movement. It shows images of his case, along with a reenactment of what happened on the Pine Ridge reservation. It also includes quotes from Sitting Bull and data from Peter Matthiessen's book. The video ends with a plea for Peltier's release, followed by an image of him in prison and the phrase "justice has not been done". The video was directed by Peter Christopherson and produced by Fiz Oliver.
