The story behind

Killing in the Name, according to DoReSol

When Tom Morello was teaching a student how to use drop-D tuning on his guitar, he paused for a moment to record a riff that came to him. The next day, the band was already working on that idea, and thus Killing in the Name was born. What is heard in the song is the result of teamwork: Morello’s riff blends with Tim Commerford’s "lava-like" bass, Brad Wilk’s "funky and brutal" drums, and Zack de la Rocha’s vocal "conviction." Morello used a Fender Telecaster and a Whammy pedal to craft his parts, including a guitar solo noted for its originality. The song, which combines elements of hardcore punk and hip hop, was released as the first single from their self-titled debut album in November 1992.

The lyrics of Killing in the Name are a direct protest against police brutality, inspired by events such as the beating of Rodney King and the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The line "some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses" explicitly links the Los Angeles Police Department to the Ku Klux Klan. The song builds intensity, culminating in the aggressive repetition of "Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!" and the final shout of "Motherfucker!" Its impact was such that, despite limited airplay in the U.S. due to its explicit lyrics, it gained massive popularity in Europe, boosting the band’s fame. The debut album, released on November 12, 1992, achieved triple platinum certification, largely thanks to the radio rotation of this track. In January 2025, Killing in the Name became the first Rage Against the Machine song to surpass one billion streams on Spotify. The single’s cover, like that of the album, features the iconic photograph of Thích Quảng Đức self-immolating in Saigon in 1963, an image previously used on the debut album’s cover.
