The story behind
Rage Against the Machine wrote Without a Face in 1996, as part of the album Evil Empire. The song talks about the problems of Mexican migrants who arrive in the United States. It speaks of a wall that the United States government is building on the border. Zack de la Rocha, the vocalist, explained this in an interview: since 1986, they have found 1500 bodies on the border. The song is a response to that.
The title refers to how many migrants do not have identity or rights. They do not carry signals, they do not have documents, and are treated as a nameless group. The chorus mentions the Zapatistas of Chiapas, who were not represented by the Mexican government. It also refers to other groups affected by NAFTA. The song feels like a protest against the system.
