The story behind

Rage Against the Machine recorded People of the Sun in 1995, in a Los Angeles studio. The song is based on the story of the Zapatista movement, something Zack de la Rocha discovered upon visiting Chiapas, in southeast Mexico. That visit led him to write the lyrics, and also generated rumors about the possible breakup of the band.

The song includes historical references, such as the fall of Tenochtitlán and the Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles in 1943. It was released as a single in 1996, and appeared on several albums, including Evil Empire. It also has its own video. In 1997, a vinyl version was released, accompanied by a letter about the Zapatista movement.
