The album title, Evil Empire, refers to an expression used at the time by the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, to refer to the USSR. However, from the band's perspective, they gave it a twist, pointing to the United States itself as that "Evil Empire." This album had an immediate impact, debuting at number one on the Billboard Top 200 charts. The band, formed in 1990 by Tom Morello and Zack de la Rocha, along with Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk, explored a distinctive blend of hip hop, funk, and heavy metal throughout the 90s, until a hiatus in 2000, later reappearing in 2007 at the Coachella festival in California, and continuing with performances at various festivals around the world, including South America in 2010.
