Fun facts

Rage Against the Machine released «Down Rodeo» as a promotional single in 1996. It was the song that was going to be the third track from Evil Empire, but never came out in physical format nor with a video. The reason, as they say, is that the band was playing a lot at that time.

The story behind

Rage Against the Machine recorded "Down Rodeo" in November and December of 1995, in a Los Angeles studio. The song was sent to radio in 1996, but was never released as an official single. The lyrics speak about inequality in the United States, using Rodeo Drive as a symbol of wealth. It talks about a white man with a shotgun, something that doesn't fit in that neighborhood. It also mentions the Black Panther Party and Fred Hampton, an activist who was killed. The song has a strong rhythm, with a powerful bass and a shouting voice. It is part of the album Evil Empire, which was released in April of 1996. The album title is a criticism of Reagan's government, which used it to call the USSR "the evil empire". For the band, it's the opposite. The song lasts five minutes and twenty-one seconds.
