The album was the band's first work to reach number one on Billboard 200, where it stayed for eight weeks. It also reached the top of several international charts. It sold over 28 million copies worldwide. Songs like You Give Love a Bad Name and Livin’ on a Prayer became hits. The first reached number one on Billboard Hot 100 and received a platinum certification. The second also reached number one and earned several platinum discs.
The single Wanted Dead or Alive entered the number seven spot on Hot 100 and achieved four platinum discs. The video for Livin’ on a Prayer won an award at the MTV Video Music Awards. Critics see it as a key album for glam metal, although the band didn't realize it at the time. The album was recorded after a poor reception of their previous work, so they decided to bring in Desmond Child to help. He stayed at the house of Richie Sambora's mother while they worked. From that collaboration, three main songs emerged.
