The story behind
When Jon Bon Jovi and his band set out to record Slippery When Wet, their third album, they decided to open it with a piece that, from the first second, would set a course. Thus was born Let It Rock, a song that starts with an unexpected, almost liturgical atmosphere, courtesy of David Bryan's keyboards, who liked to call that intro "Pink Flamingos." After that initial moment, the energy explodes with powerful choruses, a "Uooo oh oh oh oh!" that invites you to join in. In the guitar section, Richie Sambora deploys a range of effects and techniques, while Jon intervenes with shouts that invite action, in the pure style of "Let It Rock!". The ending revisits those initial choruses, but with renewed intensity, as if Jon were conducting a triumphant march.
The recording of Slippery When Wet took place between January and July 1986 at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver, under the production of Bruce Fairbairn. Engineers Tim Crich and Bob Rock, who also handled the mixing, were key in shaping the sound. This album, released in August 1986, became a milestone, featuring hits like "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer." Although Let It Rock did not have the same massive exposure as other tracks on the album, in live performances it would often extend to nine minutes, allowing David Bryan not only to showcase his piano skills but also for Jon to interact directly with the audience, creating a unique moment in the eighties, the era when the band was identified with glam metal, although they always considered themselves more of a rock and roll band.
