The story behind
The story behind Livin’ on a Prayer is that of two young people struggling to get by in a complicated world. He works in the mine, a tough and precarious job, while she, Tommy and Gina, gets by as a waitress. Both cling to hope, to the idea that things will get better, even when reality hits them hard. The song captures that feeling of resilience, of leaning on each other when everything seems to be going downhill. It is a portrait of perseverance amidst difficulties, with a melody that invites you to raise your voice and sing along with them.
This track, which would become one of Bon Jovi's most recognized songs, was recorded at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver. The recording sessions for the album Slippery When Wet took place between January and July 1986. The production was handled by Bruce Fairbairn, while the sound engineering and mixing were carried out by Bob Rock, along with Tim Crich on recording engineering. The album, released in August 1986, became a resounding success, spending eight weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. The tour to promote Slippery When Wet extended from July 1986 to October 1987, taking the band's music throughout North America and beyond.
