The story behind
When you dive into Wanted Dead or Alive, you encounter a story that goes beyond music. The idea for the title, that "wanted dead or alive" phrase, stems from Jon Bon Jovi's admiration for Old West heroes and how he identified with that duality of being loved and hated at the same time. Deep down, the lyrics reflect that feeling of being a rock band, like a gang of outlaws who arrive in a place, take everything, and leave before dawn. The inspiration came one early morning while traveling on a tour bus and unable to sleep.
This song, which became an anthem for Bon Jovi, has deep roots in the sound of other artists. Jon Bon Jovi recounted at a concert in Detroit in 2008 that "Turn the Page" by Bob Seger was a direct influence. In fact, he recalled hearing that song in 1985 while traveling through the Midwest and thinking with Richie Sambora: "We have to write a song like that." The following year, they composed Wanted Dead or Alive. The recording took place in 1986 at Little Mountain Studios in Vancouver, Canada, under the production of Bruce Fairbairn, with Tim Crich and Bob Rock on sound engineering and mixing. The track, released as a single in 1987, reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the third cut from the album Slippery When Wet to reach the Top 10, a milestone for a glam metal album.
