The album received a very positive reception from critics, who particularly valued the way melodies intertwined with lyrics. Commercially, it was a great success: it achieved platinum record certifications in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, United States, Mexico, and Venezuela. In her native country, Colombia, it reached diamond record status for selling over one million copies. Total sales of Pies Descalzos exceeded five million copies worldwide by 2014, and it became one of the best-selling Latin albums in the United States. The impact was amplified with the release of The Remixes in 1997. Six singles were released from this work between 1995 and 1997. "Estoy aquí", the first single, was her first song to enter the Latin music charts in the United States, topping Billboard's Latin Pop Songs chart for four consecutive weeks and reaching second place on Top Latin Songs. Other songs like "¿Dónde estás corazón?", "Pies descalzos, sueños blancos", "Un poco de amor", "Antología", and "Se quiere, se mata" also positioned themselves within the top twenty of both charts. As part of the promotion, Shakira embarked on her first major international tour, the Tour Pies Descalzos (1995-1997), which traveled through several cities in America.
Before Pies Descalzos, Shakira had released two albums in Colombia, Magia (1991) and Peligro (1993), which did not achieve the expected commercial success. In 1994, she also ventured into acting, starring in the Colombian series El Oasis, where she played Luisa María Rico. Despite the series' success in her country, Shakira was clear that her path was music. The release of Pies Descalzos marked a before and after, consolidating her career and opening the doors to the international market.
