The story behind
When Shakira released Pies descalzos in 1995, she was looking to give her career a new boost, and one of the songs that marked that path was Estoy aquí. This track, which she co-wrote and co-produced with Luis Fernando Ochoa, became the first single from that album and one of the first to showcase her sound. The lyrics, inspired by the story of a friend who had ended a relationship, speak of wanting to fix things when something goes wrong, with a simplicity that made it connect from the start. Musically, it is distinguished by its Latin pop influence and the prominent use of the guitar, which gave it an air of "thunderous acoustic rock," as described by John Lannert of Billboard.
Shakira's path to Pies descalzos was not immediate. After releasing her early works, Magia in 1991 and Peligro in 1993, which did not achieve the expected commercial success, she took time to finish her studies. It was in 1995 that, with the support of Sony Music Latin and Columbia Records, she released Pies descalzos, an album where each of the eleven tracks was a collaboration between her and Luis Fernando Ochoa. Estoy aquí was not only the first single in Spanish, but it was also adapted into Portuguese as Estou aqui for the Brazilian edition of the album and for the 1997 remix album The Remixes. Its impact was reflected in the music charts, reaching top positions on Billboard Latin Pop Songs and Top Latin Songs, and its music video showed her playing the guitar. The song has resonated throughout her career, being performed on tours such as the Tour Pies Descalzos and the Tour Fijación Oral.
