The story behind
The song Barefoot, White Dreams, released in 1995, presents itself as a critical reflection on social constructs and the rules that humanity has been creating. The lyrics, written by the artist herself, take the biblical story of Adam and Eve as a starting point to satirize the norms imposed over time. This social vision is also transferred to the music video, which shows a gala party as a metaphor for the masks people adopt in society, making way for images that illustrate these rules created from the past to the present. The piece was recorded in 1995, with sessions at Sonido Azulado studio in Bogotá, Colombia, and also at Ocean V.U. Studio in Miami.
This track, part of Shakira's third studio album, Pies Descalzos, was co-written and co-produced by herself along with Luis Fernando Ochoa, who was also in charge of the overall production of the album. The recording featured the participation of engineers such as Luly Deya, José Martínez, Camillo Montilla, Freddi Niño, and Victor Di Persia, while the mixing was handled by Juan Antonio Castillo. The album Pies Descalzos, initially released in Colombia in October 1995 and later internationally, marked an important step in the artist's career, who had already worked with Ochoa on previous hits. The song has resonated over time, being performed on tours such as the Oral Fixation Tour, and a Portuguese version is also known.
