The story behind
The story told by Se quiere, se mata is that of two young people, Braulio and Dana, who lead an apparently normal life, fulfilling social expectations. However, a teenage pregnancy leads Dana to make a drastic decision: an illegal abortion that ends up costing her life. The lyrics contrast this tragic loss with the indifference of the outside world, as if nothing had happened. Shakira herself explained in an interview that this song goes beyond abortion, representing how social norms can lead us to sacrifice what we value most. The music video, directed by Juan Carlos Martin, recreates this surreal atmosphere, showing the artist alongside the story's characters. Curiously, the role of Braulio in the video was played by León Larregui.
This song, part of the album Pies descalzos, was written by Shakira Mebarak and Luis Fernando Ochoa, who also handled the production. It was released as a single in March 1997, being the sixth and last from the album. The album Pies descalzos, originally released in Colombia in 1995, marked Shakira's international debut, with Luis Fernando Ochoa as a key collaborator in the composition and production of its songs. The recording of Se quiere, se mata involved engineers such as Sonido Azulado, Luly Deya, José Martínez, Camillo Montilla, Freddi Niño, and Victor Di Persia, while the mixing was handled by Juan Antonio Castillo.
