Cidade Negra

Since its inception, the music of Cidade Negra has been characterized by a vibrant fusion drawing from the roots of Jamaican reggae, inspired by figures like Bob Marley, while also embracing the richness of 1970s funk and soul with influences such as Tim Maia, and the power of classic rock from Led Zeppelin. This blend of influences shaped a distinctive sound that resonated from their earliest steps. The group formed in 1986 in Belford Roxo, Rio de Janeiro, with Bino Farias on bass, Ras Bernardo on vocals, Da Ghama on guitar and backing vocals, and Lazão on drums, percussion, and backing vocals. Their lyrics tackle themes of love but also explore sociocultural and philosophical issues, reflecting a depth that connected with audiences.

A pivotal moment in their career was the recording of their debut album, Lute Para Viver, released in 1991. This album, produced by Nelson Meirelles and Eduardo Egs, showcased a mature sound and lyrics with a strong social and reflective component about life. The track "Falar a Verdade" became an outright success, playing on all radios across Brazil and solidifying itself as an anthem that remains relevant in their live performances. The collaboration with Jimmy Cliff on the song "Mensagem" added international weight to the project. The following year, Cidade Negra took a bold step by performing at the Reggae Sunsplash Festival in Montego Bay, Jamaica, becoming the first Latin American artists to achieve this, demonstrating their reach and musical ambition.

More about Cidade Negra

Biography

The arrival of Toni Garrido as lead vocalist in 1994 marked a new direction for the band. Alongside producer Liminha, Cidade Negra's sound evolved into more pop-oriented and diverse proposals, without losing the essence of reggae and their commitment to social messages. The subsequent album Sobre Todas as Forças, released later, was a turning point, catapulting the group to massive success with tracks like "A Sombra da Maldade" and "Pensamento". This album captured the attention of a broader audience, transcending the reggae niche. The impact of Sobre Todas as Forças was amplified by notable collaborations, including Shabba Ranks on "Downtown" and Gabriel o Pensador. However, the ballad "Onde Você Mora?", written by Nando Reis and Marisa Monte, became the album's biggest hit, showcasing the band's versatility.

Success was further solidified with O Erê in 1996, again produced by Liminha, featuring collaborations with Patra and the group Inner Circle. Tracks like "Firmamento" and the title track "O Erê" resonated strongly. In 1998, Quanto Mais Curtido Melhor continued this streak, with "A Estrada" as one of its standout singles, and featured contributions from Lulu Santos and Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo. The 1999 double album Hits & Dubs highlighted their recognition, presenting a compilation of their hits on one side and remixed versions by reggae and dub figures like Mad Professor on the other. In 2000, Enquanto o Mundo Gira explored sounds closer to pop, with songs like "A Flecha e o Vulcão" and "Voz do Excluído", the latter featuring MV Bill. Despite a dissolution in 2022, Bino and Toni Garrido revived Cidade Negra's legacy, keeping their music alive.
