The story behind
The song País da fantasia, with its 4 minutes and 28 seconds, emerges from a fusion of influences that give it a distinctive character. The foundation of Cidade Negra's sound was forged from a deep admiration for Bob Marley's reggae, the richness of Brazilian music from artists like Tim Maia, and the energy of 1970s funk and soul, without forgetting the power of classic rock from Led Zeppelin. This mix, fueled by the shared passion of its members, shaped a sonic proposal that, over time, would become unmistakable.
The band's journey towards consolidation included important milestones. Their beginnings date back to 1983, when Bernardo joined Da Gama and Lazão, who were already rehearsing together. They initially formed Novo Tempo, with the goal of performing at a church festival. Later, when another group with the same name emerged, they adopted the name Lumiar, a name they also had to change for the same reason, until they finally settled on Cidade Negra. A significant boost came with a BBC London documentary exploring Baixada culture, focusing on the band. This prior recognition paved the way for the record label Sony Music, then CBS, to decide to bet on them in 1990. The following year, in 1991, along with Nelson Meirelles and Eduardo Egs on production, they released their first album, Lute Para Viver, a work that addressed themes of life and politics with mature lyrics, and from which the radio hit Falar a Verdade would emerge.
