The story behind
The song Sábado à noite, with its duration of 4 minutes and 25 seconds, draws from a mix of influences that define the sound of Cidade Negra. The band was formed from a shared passion for Jamaican rhythm, with Bob Marley as the main reference, but also for Brazilian music by artists like Tim Maia, in addition to funk and soul from the 1970s and rock classics like Led Zeppelin. This fusion of styles resulted in a distinctive sonority.
The band's beginnings date back to 1983, when under the name Lumiar, the young musicians performed at festivals. A concert in 1986 at the Arcadia Theater, in Baixada, as part of a project called "Terças Culturais," marked one of their first public appearances. The change to Cidade Negra occurred when they encountered another band with the same name. Rehearsals were held with borrowed instruments at the home of one of their members. A BBC London documentary about culture in Baixada, which focused on the band, served as a boost. It was in 1990 that Sony Music decided to bet on them. The following year, in 1991, they released their first album, Lute Para Viver, produced by Nelson Meirelles and Eduardo Egs. This record featured lyrics with political content and reflections on life, and from it came the radio hit "Falar a Verdade."
