The story behind
The song *Rio pro mar* by Cidade Negra, with its 4:10 duration, draws from a rich amalgam of influences that give it its distinctive sound. Imagine Bino, whose father played guitar and his mother sang in a church choir. It was in that environment that Bino met Da Gama and Lazão, and together they formed Novo Tempo, with the initial idea of performing at a church festival. The band evolved, and in 1983, with the arrival of Bernardo, they became Lumiar. These young musicians shared a deep passion for Jamaican rhythm, especially for Bob Marley, but also for Brazilian music by artists like Tim Maia, 1970s funk and soul, and rock classics like Led Zeppelin. This fusion of styles was the basis for creating the unique and unmistakable sound of Cidade Negra.
The band's first concert took place in 1986, at the Arcadia Theater, in Baixada, as part of a musical initiative called "Terças Culturais". The name change to Cidade Negra was due to the existence of another group with the same name, Lumiar. Rehearsals were held at Da Gama's house, using borrowed instruments. A BBC London documentary about culture in Baixada, which focused on the band, acted as a boost for the group. It was thus that in 1990, Sony Music, then known as CBS, decided to bet on them. Shortly after, in 1991, with Nelson Meirelles and Eduardo Egs producing, they released their first album, Lute Para Viver. This work was characterized by its maturity, with lyrics of political content and reflections on life and its teachings. From this album, the track *Falar a Verdade* stood out, which had a great impact on all radio stations in Brazil at that time.
