The story behind
The song O vacilão by Cidade Negra has a duration of 3 minutes and 56 seconds. The band's distinctive sound was forged from a mix of influences, including the Jamaican rhythm popularized by Bob Marley, Brazilian music by artists like Tim Maia, funk and soul from the 1970s, and rock classics like Led Zeppelin. This fusion of styles resulted in a sound that would become the trademark of Cidade Negra.
The band's beginnings date back to 1983, when Bernardo joined Da Gama and Lazão, who were already playing together. They initially formed a group called Novo Tempo with the idea of performing at a church festival. Later, after another band with the same name appeared, they adopted the name Lumiar, and finally became Cidade Negra. Rehearsals took place at Da Gama's house, using borrowed equipment. A BBC London documentary about local culture, which focused on the band, served as a boost for the group. In 1990, the record label Sony Music, then CBS, decided to bet on them. The following year, in 1991, they released their first album, Lute Para Viver, produced by Nelson Meirelles and Eduardo Egs. This record featured lyrics with political content and reflections on life.
