The album consists of 14 unreleased songs and featured the participation of various authors, including Laura Pausini herself in collaboration with Cheope and Giuseppe Dati. Among the most notable compositions is Siamo noi, a reflection on everyday life and insecurity. Per vivere, on the other hand, addresses the reality of favelas, inspired by an encounter in Rio de Janeiro. The song Jenny is based on the film Cidade dos Anjos, narrating the story of an angel in search of a person to protect. The album also includes Viaggio con te, dedicated to her father, Fabrizio Pausini, and closes with The Extra Mile, a song in English that was part of the soundtrack of the film Pokémon 2000 - O poder de um.

The production of Tra te e il mare was handled by Kc Porter, Alfredo Cerruti, Dado Parisini, and Celso Valli, with arrangements by Dado Parisini. The album was recorded in various studios in Italy, London, and the United States. In 2001, the Spanish version, Entre tú y mil mares, received a nomination in the Best Female Pop Vocal Album category at the Latin Grammy Awards. In its release year, the album sold approximately 5 million copies, and to date, it is estimated to have sold around 5.5 million physical units.
