When Dr. Dre left N.W.A, he embarked on a musical journey that would culminate in The Chronic, his debut solo album. The recording sessions took place between April and June 1992, primarily at Death Row Studios in Los Angeles, California, and also included work at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. This album, released on December 15, 1992, not only marked the beginning of his individual career but also laid the groundwork for a distinctive sound. The title, a reference to high-quality cannabis, became synonymous with this new style, and the album cover pays homage to Zig-Zag rolling papers. In 2023, a reissue was released to commemorate its 30th anniversary, through Aftermath Entertainment, Death Row Records, and Interscope Records.

It spent eight months in the Billboard Top 10, and its three lead singles also reached the top ten of the Billboard charts.
