This record marked Dr. Dre's return as a solo artist after his departure from the group N.W.A and their label Ruthless Records, amidst economic disagreements. Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., who would later be known as Snoop Dogg, was born in Long Beach on October 20, 1971. Before dedicating himself to music, he was a member of the Crips gang and had legal troubles that led him to spend time in the Wayside County jail. His music career took off in 1992, after his release, when Dr. Dre discovered him and invited him to collaborate on The Chronic and the title track of the soundtrack for the film Deep Cover.
