The story behind

Freaky Lil’, according to DoReSol

When Dr. Dre decided to release his first solo work after leaving N.W.A, he sought a sound that would define a new era of West Coast hip-hop. The result was The Chronic, an album that saw the light of day on December 15, 1992, released by Death Row Records alongside Interscope Records and distributed by Priority Records. The recording sessions were split between the studios of Death Row Records in Los Angeles and Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. This record not only marked the beginning of Dr. Dre's solo career but also served as a springboard for a young, emerging rapper: Snoop Doggy Dogg. His presence is fundamental to The Chronic, laying the groundwork for his own trajectory.

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., known artistically as Snoop Dogg, already had a past linked to the Crips gang during his high school years in Long Beach. After serving a six-month sentence in the Wayside County jail for cocaine possession, his path took a decisive turn in 1992. It was precisely Dr. Dre who discovered him, inviting him to collaborate on tracks from The Chronic and on the theme song for the film Deep Cover. This alliance catapulted Snoop Dogg onto the music scene, establishing him as one of the most prominent artists in West Coast rap and a key protégé of the producer.
