The album was produced by Mayer alongside musician Steve Jordan.
Before its official release, Continuum was performed live and broadcast on radio on several occasions. After its release, the album reached prominent positions on the charts of several countries and remained on the United States Billboard 100 for more than a year, eventually achieving double platinum status for its sales in that country.
Critics received the album positively, consolidating Mayer as one of the most outstanding guitarists of his generation. At the 2007 Grammy Awards, the album received three nominations and won two: Best Pop Album and Best Pop Performance for the single "Waiting on the World to Change". Additionally, the song "Belief" was nominated at the 2008 Grammys in the category of Best Pop Performance.
In 2020, Continuum was included in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, ranking at number 486.
