The story behind

Gravity, according to DoReSol

There are songs that seem written to be timeless, and Gravity by John Mayer is one of them. He himself has commented that this piece is what he always sought to create, even feeling that Come Back to Bed, from his previous album Heavier Things, was a first attempt to achieve that same essence. It is a theme that feels like a time capsule, a deep reflection on self-care and inner strength. Mayer explained in a concert that the idea arose in Los Angeles, in a moment of introspection, and the initial phrase "gravity...is working against me" became the pillar of a concise yet powerful lyric. The song is a reminder of the importance of staying true to oneself, of having the clarity to say "no" as your mother would, because, as he himself says, it is easier to stray than to stand firm.

This musical piece, which was released as a single in 2007, is part of three different works by John Mayer. We first find it on the 2005 live album, Try!, by the John Mayer Trio, which included only two songs that would later appear on his studio album. Then, in 2006, it appeared on Continuum, his third studio album, recorded between January 2005 and July 2006. This album marked a shift in his sound, embracing more blues and soul, with the participation of bassist Pino Palladino and the production of Steve Jordan, who is also a drummer. Finally, a live version of Gravity was included in Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live in Los Angeles, from 2008. The influence of Buddy Guy, one of his idols, is clearly perceived in this theme, described as a relaxed number with bluesy undertones. The recording of Continuum took place in several studios, including Avatar Studios in New York, and the album was released on September 12, 2006. The song reached #71 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #63 on the Hot 100 Digital Songs Chart. At the 2007 Grammy Awards ceremony, John Mayer performed Gravity with Corinne Bailey Rae and John Legend, who contributed backing vocals and piano to the piece. The live version of Gravity from Where The Light Is, moreover, won the award for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards.
