The story behind

Bold as Love, according to DoReSol

The song Bold as Love, which closes the album Axis: Bold as Love, is a sonic journey that explores the complexity of feelings through color metaphors. Jimi Hendrix himself composed it, and it is said that the lyrics represent an "Olympic battle of passions" where love manifests in multiple shades, requiring commitment and bravery to fully engage. This idea that people, despite their differences, are a unity, or that a spectrum of emotions corresponding to colors resides within each person, is one of the interpretations derived from its lyrics. The use of colors as poetic devices in the song is reminiscent of other tracks from the same album like One Rainy Wish and Love or Confusion from Are You Experienced. In its final part, Jimi Hendrix's guitar uses a *phasing* effect that, according to some, gives it an orchestral sound, bringing the piece to an expansive close.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience delved into the recording of Bold as Love in October 1967 at Olympic Sound Studios in London. They worked intensely on the song, recording over twenty different takes and four different endings in a single day. Finally, they opted for a combination of takes 21 and 27 for the definitive version. The production was handled by Chas Chandler, the band's manager, and the sound engineering was carried out by Eddie Kramer. This piece is considered a highlight of the album, showcasing the evolution and depth of Jimi Hendrix as a composer, fusing influences from Curtis Mayfield's soul with Bob Dylan's lyrics and overflowing energy.

Later, American artist John Mayer recorded his own version of Bold as Love for his album Continuum, released in 2006. In his interpretation, Mayer maintains the emotional essence of the original but imbues it with a more relaxed vocal style and a blues-tinged guitar sound, reflecting his own musical identity. This version is seen as a respectful homage to the work of Jimi Hendrix, highlighting the admiration Mayer feels for him and his skill as a guitarist. A live version of this interpretation was also included on the 2008 visual album, Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live in Los Angeles.
